Obasanjo’s letter tears PDP apart

The Peoples Democratic Party is divided over whether or not former President Olusegun Obasanjo should be punished for anti-party activities.

SUNDAY PUNCH gathered in Abuja on Friday that some leaders had been mooting the idea that Obasanjo should be punished for the letter he wrote to President Goodluck Jonathan.

They maintained that the letter was against the interest of the party.

It was learnt that while some argued that disciplinary action should be taken against the ex-president, others were against doing so, arguing that it was better to ignore him.

SAD: Former ASUU president Festus Iyayi killed in fatal crash today

Former President of Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Dr. Festus Iyayi, was killed this afternoon in a fatal auto accident in Lokoja, on his way to Kano state for a meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU where the union is expected to call off its four month old strike.

It's being reported that the convoy of the Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Idris Wada, rammed into the vehicle conveying Professor Iyayi and some members of the union to Kano. The university don who is also a popular writer, died on the scene while two other occupants of the vehicle were injured

Eaglets get N2m each, national honours

President Goodluck Jonathan on Sunday announced a cash gift of N2m each for all the players of the nation’s Under-17 team, the Golden Eaglets, who won the 2013 FIFA Under-17 World Soccer Championship on Friday in Abu Dhabi, United Emirates.

The players, their handlers and key members of the Nigerian Supporters’ Club, according to the President, will also be honoured with national honours during the next award ceremony.

Woman, 46, allegedly raped, killed

ADO EKITI – A  46-year old woman, Mrs. Eunice Titilayo Ogundele, was allegedly raped then murdered at Igede Ekiti, weekend, by yet to be identified persons.

According to the  husband of the deceased, Mr.Michael Ogundele, his wife left home in the early hours of Friday  for a church service at her  pastor’s residence.

He said she was allegedly hit with a pestle on the head by her assailants on the way.

Aliyu Mutairu, the shrine operator apprehended by the police in Mobarajo village via Ifewara along Ilesa/Ife express road in Atakumosa-West Government Area of Osun State for alleged felony, possession of criminal charms and fake currency, says he has no regrets of his actions. He has since been granted bail by the Osogbo Magistrate Court.
The accused, through his counsel Wale Idowu told the Court he was not involved in dealing with human parts or any other criminal activities.
Aliyu said he had been in the business for 12 years so he could make ends meet. Before operating a shrine, he was an auto electrician, then motor parts dealer, but was "duped." This is when he decided to take up herbs business, and later, into defrauding unsuspecting persons in Lagos.

ASUU have given the Federal Government certain conditions to be met before the union could call off strike

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities have given the Federal Government certain conditions to be met before the union could call off its four-month old strike.

Part of this condition, Saturday PUNCHlearnt, is that all federal parastatals in charge of fund, labour, and education must sign the agreement purportedly reached between its leadership and the Federal Government on Tuesday.

A prominent member of the union, who craved anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on behalf of the union, told Saturday PUNCH that doing this would give the association the confidence that “the Federal Government knows what it is doing when it signed the agreement.”

He said, “I must tell you that our mandate remains. The only mandate we have is that 2009 agreement must be met. We have not reached any agreement with the Federal Government.

“Since the Federal Government  wants to be releasing N220bn every year for five years, then all monetary and regulatory agencies must sign. The  Central Bank of Nigeria, Ministries of Finance and Labour, National Assembly, Office of the Presidency, National Universities Commission, Tertiary Education Trust Fund, Trade Union Congress and our umbrella body, the Nigeria Labour Congress, must sign with consequences stated.

Nigeria win U-17 World Cup, beat Mexico 3-0

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets became the first country to win the FIFA Under-17 World Cup for the fourth time on Friday after handing a comprehensive 3-0 defeat to their Mexican counterparts, El Tri, at the  El Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

Alele-Williams seeks end to ASUU strike

A former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Grace Alele-Williams, has called for the speedy resolution of the strike embarked upon by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

The strike, which started on July 1, has paralysed academic activities in public universities across the country.

Alele-Williams, who is the first female vice-chancellor in Nigeria, frowned on a statement credited to the Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, that the Federal Government did not know the cost implication of the agreement it entered into with the university teachers in 2009.

She spoke during the public presentation of two books written by an 88-year-old retired Lagos State Deputy Chief Inspector of Education, Mrs. Rhoda Johnson-Smith, in Lagos, on Thursday. The books are titled, ‘Destined to be different’ and ‘Realities of life.’

CONFESSION:‘I sold Pasuma’s Range Rover Sport for N950,000’

Kasali Adegoke, the leader of the armed robbery gang that robbed popular fuji musician, Wasiu Alabi aka Pasuma, of his 2006 Range Rover Sport, says he sold the vehicle for N950,000.

A search on the Internet by our correspondent, however, suggested that used version of the vehicle sells for N3.5m, while a new one costs between N8m and N9m.

The 32-year-old, who is currently in detention at the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Ogun State, said he sold the car to a receiver at Cotonou.

He said, “I have a receiver at Cotonou who usually calls to place orders for any type of vehicle that he wants. Before we stole Pasuma’s car, my buyer had already told me that he wanted a Range Rover Sport. We were just on the lookout for possible victims when we noticed Pasuma’s car.”

Although based in Ogun State, Adegoke said he usually comes to Lagos to steal choice vehicles.

On the night Pasuma was robbed, Adegoke said he was merely roaming the Ahamddiya area of Lagos along with some members of his gang when the musician was sighted.

SAD; 75-Yr-Old Man Commits Suicide After VIO Seized 2 Of His Buses

Residents of Oke-Ayepe, Onward Estate in Osogbo Local Government Area of Osun State were, yesterday, thrown into mourning when a 75-year-old grandfather, Pa Adisa Hassan, allegedly committed suicide in the storeroom of his house. The deceased popularly known as Baba Tawa, who operated three buses for his inter-city transport business was said to have hanged himself  around 5.00a.m. after officers of the Vehicle Inspection Officials (VIO) seized two of his three buses.

Eye-witness accounts revealed that Pa Hassan woke up alongside his family members around 5.00a.m. to observe their usual morning prayer (Subri) but changed his mind on his way to the mosque situated opposite his house and went into his store room and took his life.

SAD:Female banker allegedly steals 24million Naira from customers account

A female staff of an old generation bank in Ondo State, southwest Nigeria, Alabi Joy Omotayo, 26, has been arrested by the police at Onikan division, Ikoyi, Lagos for allegedly withdrawing N24 million from the bank’s customers’ accounts.

After investigation by Police Corporal Orifa Olugbenga and his team, the suspect was arraigned before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court, Lagos on a five-count charge of felony to wit, stealing.

The police alleged in charge No C/34/2013 that the accused was arrested following a complaint by the management of the bank’s headquarters in Lagos that the accused, a customer service care officer at their Ondo branch office, had stolen N24 million.

The facts: DJ Jaydee of Grotto stabbed Davido's bodyguards, evades police 

Falsified accounts of a recent incident at the Grotto club on Sunday have made the rounds. Davido’s Management hereby wishes to clear the air on them with the statement below.

After a successful outing at a recent concert on Sunday November 3 at Eko Hotels, popular musician Davido headed to the Grotto Nightclub on Victoria Island. After a brief stay at the club, Davido and his crew proceeded to his vehicle outside to head home. Upon entering the vehicle, he realized that his ATM card was missing. FG TO GIVE UNIVERSITIES N1.1tn IN FIVE YEARS

Details of the  Monday/ Tuesday marathon meeting  between President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of Academic Staff Union  of  Universities have begun to emerge.

The PUNCH  gathered on Tuesday evening that a key component of the agreement reached by the parties was  that the Federal Government  would  inject N1.1tn into public universities in the next five years.

A reliable source, who made this known, also hinted that the strike would be called off anytime next week.

He  said the government team which was led by President Goodluck Jonathan would release   N220bn yearly into the sector beginning from 2014.

The source added, “The meeting should be the longest that we have ever had on this crisis but I can tell you that both parties were frank all through the discussions.

“The parties also showed commitment towards ending the crisis. The President in particular showed that he was serious about ending the strike and that was why he offered to release over N1tn to the universities in the next five years. PLS CONTINUE
